Time can be a bonding opportunity—or a cancer—on any expedition. Given our dynamics I wasn't looking forward to this day of inactivity at Camp Three. On our descent from the summit we were scheduled to come directly to this spot for a night's rest. As a result, Rollie and Pete were very busy stashing supplies and setting up the camp for our two nights here, and as a way station, come summit day.

I spotted Snowe and Boggs off by themselves, pacing as they spoke, stopping from time to time for a little face-to-face. I'm no businessman but they didn't look to be partners to me, certainly not happy ones.

Kitchens lay in his tent, ostensibly resting his knee but more likely nursing a bottle. Piquet spent some time with Stern at the dining area but was smart enough to end that quickly. I watched Stern wander over to the other teams, no doubt trolling for tidbits he could warp into a story. I asked Rollie if I could do anything and he declined. “We've got it well in hand. You're our guest. Enjoy.”

I made a comfortable seat against one of the sleds where I could face the bright sun and relaxed, even dozing off for a few minutes before Stern joined me, jolting me awake as he plopped on the sled.

“Those school teachers are real clowns,” he said contemptuously.

“I think they're principals.”

“Right, too lazy to teach so they administer. I've experience with the type. My ex is a school superintendent so to I know all about them. Have you talked to that Gomez guy? Thinks he's king of the world and all the rest of us should bow and scrap before him. I've seen his type before too. What a jerk!”

“Been doing any blogging, Stern?” I asked. The year before he'd blogged up the flank of Everest, spreading hatred and anger along the way since most of those climbing had some form of Internet access. They'd read what he wrote and saw the unflattering photos he'd taken and elected to post. Though that expedition had enough inherent conflicts Sterns actions had only made matters worse, and in my opinion, accounted for a few of the deaths. Of course, he didn't see it that way.

“Not this time. I'm here on the QT. Can't have those guys thinking I'm reporting every little thing. I've sent some emails to my editor. Hot stuff. He's pretty stoked about what's going on, especially Greene showing up. We'd heard he'd be in Anchorage and was considering a climb but I can't believe my luck in having him up here. My editor says the subpoena was issued and served on his group yesterday. He can't be a happy man. Say, do you think anything's going to happen between the Chief and Boggs? It sure looked like it to me before. Those two really don't like each other. And what do you think of the Chief's guides? Thugs if you ask me. I think one of them has a prison tat.
